When Should You Replace Your Boiler?

When Should You Replace Your Boiler?

Posted on February 21, 2019

It’s a sad fact that boilers do tend to become less efficient with age. This usually happens once they are around 10 to 15 years old, so it may now be time to say goodbye to your beloved workhorse and consider the benefits of a new boiler. The latest models are also more energy-efficient anyway, thus saving you £££s on your fuel bills. Around 60% of your household’s annual energy bills will be spent on your boiler, so you can see how important it is to have one that is working as efficiently as possible.

Apart from the natural deterioration, your boiler goes through with age (don’t we all?) there are also more obvious warning signs that your boiler really is on its way out. Here they are:

    1. The cost of frequent repairs to your boiler as well as possibly hard-to-find (and expensive) parts on older models is escalating.
If you have to have your boiler repaired more than once a year, despite regular servicing, the cost of these call-outs is going to become greater than the cost of replacing your boiler altogether. Also, in older models, the parts become obsolete and therefore hard to locate, as well as being expensive when you do manage to find them.
    2. There has recently been an increase in noise from your boiler or radiators.
It is normal for central heating systems to make some sounds, however, if you have recently noticed they have got louder or there are additional noises (for example humming, vibrating, or banging), this may mean there is a fault with your boiler.
    3. The blue flame has changed to yellow.
Don’t ignore this one, this is a sign that your boiler needs immediate attention!
    4. You notice an odd smell coming from your boiler when it’s on.
Again, this is a sure sign that your boiler needs urgent attention and probably a replacement is in order. That familiar sulfurous, eggy odour means it most likely has a gas leak. This is obviously serious and means you should turn your boiler off immediately.
    5. Your boiler is simply not working as well as it used to and you have been told by an engineer that it is beyond repair…
For example, if you notice that it is now taking a lot longer than it used to for your radiators to warm up, or you’re constantly having to adjust the pressure of your boiler, now might be the time to consider getting a new one.
