Reduce Your Heating Bill With These Easy Tips

Posted on May 30, 2022

In just a few simple steps, you could help save your household hundreds of pounds off your heating bill.

As the cost of living increases, it’s becoming increasingly important for homeowners to try and keep their heating bills as low as possible. Here are a few easy to implement tips that could help you reduce your heating bills and save a bit of much-needed cash.

  1. Shop Around

Many people believe that shopping around and switching energy supplier won’t some them much money, if any. But actually it’s possible it could reduce your heating bills quite significantly! The best time of year to switch is early Autumn, so be prepared and start comparing energy prices around October time. As the nights get darker and colder, we start to rely on our heating more, so it makes perfect sense to make sure you are getting the best rates possible.
  2. Keep Up With Regular Boiler Services

We cannot stress enough how vital it is that you carry out an annual boiler service. Regularly servicing your boiler helps make sure that it is working properly – Reliably so you don’t suddenly lose heating and hot water, but also efficiently, so you’re not paying more than you need to. It might seem like yet another thing to pay out for, but it’s much better to pay a small fee for a boiler service, than thousands of pounds for a boiler replacement. Plus, if you’re a Care Plan customer with Aura Gas, you get your boiler service included in your monthly fee!
  3. Dry Your Clothes Outside, Even in Cooler Weather

We know it’s tempting to drape wet washing over the radiators to get them dry as quickly as possible, but by doing that you are stopping the radiators working at their best. When they are covered in clothes, they cannot release as much heat into the room, which means that your boiler ends up running for longer. Which means, you guessed it, higher heating bills. Try instead putting your washing machine on an extra spin at the end to get rid of as much moisture as possible, and hang outside whenever the weather is dry.

Whilst we’re talking about radiators, it’s a good idea to make sure that they are clean and working to their full potential. Keeping them free of sludge makes sure the whole radiator is heating up and thus transferring that warmth to the room. If you have cold spots on your radiators, you could have a build-up of sludge, which could add up to 25% to your heating bill.
  4. Don’t Switch to Electric Heaters

You might be thinking of switching on an electric heater in a bid to keep your heating bills down, but all you’re doing is reducing money from one bill and adding it onto another – And likely end up costing you more. An hour and a half of powering an electric heater is more expensive that turning your heating on or up a bit for the same duration of time. Instead, set a timer on your boiler so it only comes on at certain times of day – A Smart Thermostat is a great way of doing this. You could also even use a hot water bottle instead!
  5. Out-Smart Your Heating

Smart Thermostats are a great way of controlling your home heating. Not only do they enable you to have more control over when you heat your home, they also give you plenty of information and data to help you tweak your energy usage and make savings.
  6. Consider Replacing an Old, Faulty Boiler

Do you need to replace your boiler? We know the thought of a costly boiler replacement can seem like something to avoid for as long as possible. But continuing to use an old, faulty boiler is likely to cause more costs than you might realise. Not only does it cost money to keep making repairs and replace faulty parts, but older boilers are not as efficient as newer, modern boilers. An inefficient boiler will not be heating your home in the way that it should, and could be costing you more than necessary on monthly heating bills. Whilst it may seem a lot of money to spend on getting a new boiler, the efficiency of it will make it worth it in the long run.

If replacing your boiler is just out of the question at the moment, then consider just replacing the heating controls instead in the meantime.
