When Should New Radiators and Pipework Be Replaced For New Heating Systems?

Posted on July 15, 2016

Now that most people have double glazed windows and good insulation, we don’t need to keep radiators under a window. This used to be reommended because in the days of single-glazing, cool air from the window would meet with the warmth from the radiator. Things have changed a lot since then. But with all these developments in home heating, when should radiators and pipework be replaced?

Draught-Proof

Many people liked their radiator under a window because it kept furniture away from draughts. Now the draughts are not a problem, it is fine to have a sofa, for example, beneath a window. These days, because barely any heat is lost from windows, there is much more freedom when planning a room.

Great Choice

If you’re renovating your home or building a new one, you need to work out how to configure your new heating systems and also where to position your radiators. These days, the market is full of ideas for new heating systems. This includes radiators – from tall vertical models to long low ones, and in all styles from modern to Victorian-inspired designs. This means you’re bound to find a great model to suit your interior design.

Energy-Efficient

You also need to consider how to run your heating system efficiently; keeping heating bills as low as possible. Radiators on internal walls will inevitably lose a smaller amount of heat compared with radiators on external walls. The heat retained in an internal wall will be released into the room it’s in rather than lost outside. This stored heat will last for longer at a higher temperature. Alternatively, radiators on external walls reduces the chance of condensation, though this shouldn’t be an issue in a well-ventilated property.

Flexibility

Placing a radiator away from a window gives more flexibility for interior design, allowing you to hide pipework in a stylish and practical way. The easier it is to access the pipework, the lower any repair or radiator replacement costs should be.

New Boiler

There is no doubt that the location of radiators is important. However, the best way to ensure true energy-efficiency is to install a good quality new boiler. Also, making sure that cavity walls and loft space are well insulated and removing any sources of draughts will also go a long way in reducing your bills.
