If your boiler is faulty or more than 5 years old, or if your home does not have a central heating system then Government-backed grants are available for those who fit the criteria. These grants cover some or all of the cost of replacements/fittings and are part of the ECO scheme (“Energy Companies Obligation”). This scheme means that energy suppliers are obliged to help households living in fuel poverty pay towards energy-saving improvements. And even if you don’t qualify for one of these Grants, you could still have a new boiler or heating system installed using something called the “Green Deal”. All is explained in this article.
“OK, my boiler isn’t great, how do I qualify?”
The heating grant scheme is only available to homeowners, as it is supposed to be the landlord’s responsibility to pay for boiler and heating improvements in tenants’ homes. Also, someone living in your household must receive one of these benefits:
- Armed Forces Independence Payment
- Attendance Allowance
- Carer’s Allowance
- Child Benefit (depending on income)
- Child Tax Credit
- Constant Attendance Allowance
- Disability Living Allowance
- Income-Based Jobseekers Allowance
- Income-Related Employment Support Allowance
- Income Support
- Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit
- Pension Guarantee Credit
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- Severe Disablement Allowance
- Universal Credit
- War Pensions Mobility Supplement
- Working Tax Credit
“Is the whole cost covered by the Grant?”
Sometimes a contribution is required. This depends on what type of property you have and what heating system you currently have but don’t worry as there are some options available to help you pay it. These include 0% finance, standard finance or the “Green Deal” which uses the money saved on your energy bill from having a new boiler installed to pay for the shortfall, meaning that you will never be out of pocket.
“and if I don’t qualify?”
The Green Deal also helps those who don’t qualify for an ECO Grant by offering a type of loan; however, the loan is repaid using your energy bill savings from having the new system. The Green Deal is not available to Council or Housing Association tenants.
