Energy Saving Advice – Our Top 10 Tips to Save Energy and Money

Posted on February 2, 2021

What are your intentions for this new year? (Apart from get out more..).

To save money? Save energy? Save the environment? Well, you’re in luck. We’ve got just the info you need to get going on all 3 of these with easy to implement, everyday actions.

With it recently being Big Energy Saving Week we thought what better time to share our top 10 energy saving tips from your local boiler experts.

  1. Want to make a saving without feeling cold? Try turning your heating down by just 1 degree C. You’ll probably hardly notice the difference in temperature, but you may well notice the saving of upto £75 by the end of the year! You could also set your heating on a timer so it’s only on when you need it to be. [Always make sure your home is warm enough in cold weather – A cold home can damage your health].
  2. Fancy a cuppa? If it’s only you you’re making it for, then only fill the kettle with the amount of water you need rather than to the top. It takes less energy to boil it that way!
  3. When’s the last time you dusted your lightbulbs? We’re not judging! Dust them off so they provide more light – That way, you’ll need less turned on. You could also consider replacing them with energy efficient bulbs. And always turn them off when you don’t need them!
  4. Feeling a draught? Try closing internal doors so that rooms heat up faster, stay warm longer and you don’t need the heating on as high for as long.
  5. Do you have a smart thermostat? These handy little gadgets can help you to spot where you could be saving money. Team them with a programmer and thermostatic radiator valve and you could be saving even more money (and energy) when using them efficiently.
  6. Do you turn your laptop off at the socket? What with so many people now working from home, there’s a good chance you’ve got a laptop or two laying around the house. Turning the charger off at the socket when it’s fully charged will save energy. That goes for your phone too!
  7. Warming up the bedroom with an electric heater? You could consider an electric blanket instead. We know it seems like something your granny would use, but there’s nothing cosier than a lovely warm bed through the Winter months – And most electric blankets use far less energy than heaters.
  8. Did you know your plasma TV could be costing you nearly £100 a year in electricity? If you switch to LCD you’ll be saving money and using a third of the energy that a plasma uses.
  9. White Goods. When we think about saving energy and costs in our home, we usually go straight to the heating. But large white goods are also a rather sizable chunk of our energy usage and bills. Fridges, washing machines and tumble dryers – We’re looking at you! Especially the older models. If you’re in the market for a new one, make sure you look at the energy efficiency labels whilst shopping around so you can make an informed choice.
  10. What about water? When you’re doing the washing up, fill a bowl or the sink instead of using a running hot tap. Fancy saving another £75 a year? Try spending 1 minute less in the shower each day (based on a family of 4).

We hope these top tips on energy saving gave you some swaps to try at home. Get saving!
